What can you do to treat heavy periods?

Heavy periods occur when a woman loses significantly more blood during their period than what they would consider as normal for them. Heavy periods also known as menorrhagia in the medical world, is known to affect roughly 1 in 3 women during their life at one point or another but what can be done to treat heavy periods?

Bleeding from a heavy period is not always a sign that there is something to be seriously concerned about, although a heavy period can prove to be a massive inconvenience when it comes to living your daily life. Period pain is known to usually accompany heavy periods, so if you suffer a combination of the two it is always recommended to get checked out by our consultant gynaecologist at Gyneaesthetics London.

What is classed a Heavy Period?

It is difficult to decide if a period is particularly heavy as the amount of blood lost during a period varies from woman to woman – what would be classed a heavy for one woman could be considered normal for another. Doctors will normally class a period as heavy if you lose over 80ml of blood during it, but this is obviously very difficult to precisely measure.

Most women will know how much they usually bleed during their period, so they are likely to notice that they have bled an excessive amount compared to normal.

There are, however, a few indictors that you are suffering from heavy periods, including:
• During your period you have bled heavily onto your bedding or through your clothes
• You feel that you must use pads and tampons together during your period
• You have used considerably more pads and tampons during a period than you normally do

Known Causes of Heavy Periods

The causes of a heavy period can very often remain unidentified, but despite this several factors or conditions have been known to cause a heavy period.

They are not limited to but include:
• Under-active Thyroid – This can cause you to have no, irregular or heavy periods
• Age – Heavy periods are most commonly known to affect aged between 30 and 49
• Medication – Certain types of medication which prevent blood clots, such as warfarin, can cause heavy periods
• Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – this is a well-known medical condition in women which sometimes causes irregular periods, which when they start again can be quite heavy
• Fibroids – non-cancerous polyps or growths, of varying sizes and shapes, that can occur in the uterus wall and lining
• Endometriosis – lining or tissue otherwise found in the womb is found in other areas of the body such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes

Many women will ask “are heavy periods a sign of the menopause?” and before a woman’s periods stop completely because of the menopause it has been known for changes in their regular menstrual cycle to occur. Therefore, heavy periods can be linked to the menopause though this is more likely with women who are aged between 45 and 55, the age the menopause normally occurs.

Will a heavy period stop me from conceiving?

Simply suffering a heavy period will not change how likely you are to conceive or not. However, some of the known causes of heavy bleeding will affect your chances of getting pregnant. Fibroids, as mentioned in the section above, can cause heavy periods and they are known to affect how fertile you are.

During your visit to Gyneaesthetics London, you should make it known that you would like to have children at some point in your life or that you are currently trying to get pregnant. Your consultant gynaecologist will need to know this as it will influence your potential treatment choices.

Will I need surgery to Treat heavy periods?

The cause of your heavy period will determine if you need to have surgery or not. Normally, non-surgical procedures and the use of medication are the treatment methods used first when it comes to heavy periods.

Surgery to stop heavy periods is normally only used as a last resort when the regular treatment methods have proven to be unsuccessful. The type or level of surgery you would receive depends on your symptoms and their severity.
